Lockerbie Writers is a diverse group of people, from beginners and occasional scribblers through to those with creative writing qualifications and/or published works. Our sister group, A Novel Approach, is an equally varied group of novelists at every stage of the process, from first ideas to final proofreads.
Below are the biographies of some of our members.
Steph Newham is Lockerbie Writers’ chairperson. She retired from the NHS where she had used story telling as a therapeutic tool. On retirement she did a Cert in Creative Writing followed by an MA at Lancaster University. She is currently working on a collection of short stories as well as a historical novel. She has had articles published in newspapers and non-fiction journals. Her short stories are published in several anthologies and on-line e-zines. She enjoys running workshops and encouraging others to develop their writing skills.
Kerrie McKinnel is Lockerbie Writers’ Events Manager and a founding member of A Novel Approach. Since completing her MLitt Creative Writing (University of Glasgow), Kerrie has run a number of successful writing workshops and events for both groups, and compiled and co-edited Lockerbie Writers’ two books, Lockerbie Writers’ Anthology (2016) and Behind Closed Doors (2019).
Kerrie is a self-employed writer and also runs creative writing workshops and events through her business, Kerrie McKinnel – Writer. Her writing has been featured in publications including Gutter, Southlight and From Glasgow to Saturn.

Paula lives near Lockerbie, Scotland, with her family and is a mum to a teenage daughter, two grown-up stepchildren, and an overly chatty cat. She enjoys laughing, eating cake, and writing with Lockerbie Writers; preferably all at the same time.
She worked as a scientist for 22 years in England, but now works as a librarian in a Scottish town where there’s more sheep than books (she made that fact up, but seriously, there’s lots of sheep here.)
Paula is a published poet, short story and a prize-winning flash fiction writer. She’s also a judge for BBC Radio 2’s 500 words and Castle Loch Trust’s children’s writing competitions. You can find her blogging at: www.facebook.com/deckywriting
Kath J. Rennie
After a visit to Lockerbie in 1984, Kath decided to move to the town, with her family, finding rural-life more in keeping with her love of nature, which inspired many pieces of published poetry. In 2015, Kath joined Lockerbie writers group, where she was inspired to write short stories and continues to do so …
She is a mother of three sons, a step-son and five granddaughters.
Deborah is the proud mother of two young boys who inspire her every day. For her, a day without writing/sketching is a rare commodity – ten minutes can always be snatched from somewhere.
She has been interested in writing and illustration for as long as she can remember, and attributes a sizeable chunk of her passion in this area to the magical marriage that is, Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake.
